The DevOps gap bridging the gap between IT development and IT operations

Orchestration helps the often-disconnected IT development and administration departments work together better. The term DevOps outlines the goal of improving interactivity and productivity between development (Dev, short for development) and system administration (Ops, short for operations).

At the center of this trend are the applications whose functionality should ensure maximum business success. The basic concepts of agile development methods should also be transferred to the IT operation in order to be able to create a seamless process from the developers to the user.

So it's about demolishing proverbial walls between the participants, because developers and administrators often do not just sit in different locations, but simply work past each other.

New development methods, such as Agile, Scrum and Kanban, are providing IT developers with ways to increase enterprise productivity and meet changing business needs. However, these process models have their own consequences, which affect the software development process in different ways.

One challenge is how to coordinate the demand for specific application features and associated updates within a company. The provision of the developed program code in daily operation is not without problems. At these interfaces between development and IT operation, important handovers fail, delays occur and unpredictable costs creep in.

Dividing walls between the actors

The problems in companies building a cooperative DevOps environment start with different ways of thinking in the departments. In the past, IT was limited to keeping your business running smoothly in the background. Business management factors for increasing efficiency, sales and profits are now also being incorporated into the development of modern IT systems.

From an IT perspective, changes and value creation are driven by the developers. They are often more familiar with agile methods and practices because they need to get the feedback they need from their peers. Administrators, on the other hand, have the responsibility to ensure the smooth operation of a highly available IT environment that the company needs to achieve the desired agility, revenue, and profit targets.

At the same time, the IT technology professionals have now acquired the necessary business vocabulary to be able to implement business requirements and requirements in the most detailed and effective way possible. This trend can greatly facilitate the rapprochement between the IT department and other business units. Suddenly both sides speak the same language and no longer by each other.
