OS X 10.8 sold over three million copies in the first four days
Since last Wednesday, Mac owners can upgrade their operating system to OS X 10.8, codenamed Mountain Lion. The rush of converters is significant - because the new features have it all.
The update to OS X 10.8 is not expensive: It costs $ 20 in the home country of Apple, in this country you pay 16 euros for download from the Mac App Store , with which the entire computer stock of the family may be upgraded. But not all Mac fans the update is available. Prerequisite is a system that runs at least with OS X 10.6.8 - this was the Mac App Store on the desktop Macs accessible. And then there are still many hardware hurdles in the way.
Despite these limitations, Apple reports that this was the most successful launch of any Apple OS ever. This may be due to both the low price and the attractive range of functions. So, if you do not have to buy a new Mac to use OS X Mountain Lion, you're in for a treat. The following prerequisites must be met:
at least 2 gigabytes of RAM
at least 8 gigabytes of free space on the hard disk or SSD
a 64-bit UEFI must be installed.
OS X 10.8 compatible Macs
Just the last point, the UEFI (a modern form of the so far common in the Windows world BIOS), is a knockout criterion for many existing Macs. Apple states on its website that the following models are supported:
iMac (mid-2007 and newer)
MacBook (late 2008 aluminum, early 2009 and newer)
MacBook Pro (mid and late 2007 and later)
Xserve (early 2009)
MacBook Air (late 2008 and later)
Mac mini (early 2009 and later)
Mac Pro (early 2008 and newer).
Limitations of AirPlay Mirroring ...
However, machines that meet these minimum requirements may not necessarily use all the features of OS X 10.8. For example, if you want to transfer movies via AirPlay Mirroring, you need an AppleTV that is at least second-generation, a Sandy Bridge CPU that supports copy-protected streaming. These are according to Apple the following models:
iMac (mid-2011 and newer)
Mac mini (mid-2011 and newer)
MacBook Air (mid-2011 and newer)
MacBook Pro (early 2011 and newer).
Airplay Mirroring transmits screen content, but video content up to 1080p or music can also be sent to Airplay-enabled stereo systems and speakers.
... and Airdrop
Not so close are the requirements if you want to use Airdrop, so the easy way to transfer files via ad hoc Wi-Fi connection from one computer to another. Again, not all OS-X-10.8-compatible computers understand this, because there must be a WLAN card, which keeps the connection in the regular network, while at the same time a second network for Airdrop is spanned. The following models can be used by Airdrop:
MacBook Pro (late 2008 or later)
MacBook Air (late 2010 or later)
MacBook (late 2008 or later)
iMac (early 2009 or later)
Mac mini (mid-2010 or newer)
Mac Pro (early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card or mid-2010).
Of course, a modern Mac needs Internet access, and some features can only be used with AppleID.
