5 reasons to move to the public cloud
Agility, flexibility, economy ... Compared to those of the private cloud (servers dedicated to the company), the promises of the public cloud (shared servers) are numerous. Companies can no longer ignore this essential lever of digital transformation. According to a Comm'Back survey, nearly 84% in France are familiar with this concept of pooling IT resources in the network. Depending on the case, they have an interest in using it either in addition to their private cloud, or as a total replacement of traditional internal solutions. An overview of the five reasons for moving to the public cloud.
1 Deploy quickly internationally
In some activities, going abroad requires the extension of the information system, if only to be close to the customers. This is the case in e-commerce. But opening data centers requires heavy investment and a lot of time. The public cloud offers the solution to deploy quickly and at the lowest cost. That's what Cdiscount did. Building on Microsoft's Azure cloud, the French online retailer moved into nine emerging markets in less than a year. And it plans to continue expanding at an even faster pace. "It would have taken us more than eight months to extend our private cloud from France to a single country," says Romain Broussard, director of production infrastructure at Cdiscount. And it would have been impossible to tackle the nine planned deployments together. The deployment began with Colombia. It took four months. "It was the most complicated country, because we had to adapt our e-commerce platform to the Microsoft cloud in advance," says Romain Broussard. We then duplicated the system in other countries at the rate of two to three weeks per country. We are now at a deployment time of a week and we expect to reduce it to one day. For Cdiscount, the public cloud has emerged as a necessity, despite a higher cost over time than the traditional solution based on internal data centers. It's the price of agility. because we had to pre-adapt our e-commerce platform to the Microsoft cloud, says Romain Broussard. 2 Grow fast without investing
Fast-growing start-ups do not have the time or the means to own their own IT resources. With the public cloud, they have access to significant computing and storage capabilities, sized exactly according to their needs, without having to invest in their own infrastructure. It is by relying exclusively on the cloud of Amazon Web Services that Internet stars like Netflix, Spotify or Airbnbhave founded their exponential development. They can increase leased resources to Amazon Web Services as they grow and pay only for what they consume. In France, BlaBlaCar chose a hybrid approach. At least for the moment. For the bulk of processing tasks, the French carpooling platform relies on a private cloud of six datacenters located in Paris, London, Miami and Singapore. But, for data storage and processing overflows during peak activity, it uses the cloud of Amazon Web Services. This approach aims to keep a minimum of IT skills in-house while enjoying the cost and flexibility benefits of the public cloud. But it is not excluded in the long run to migrate entirely to the public cloud if the rapid growth of society requires it.
3 Change financial model
The public cloud offers the advantage of moving to a financial model of operating cost. No more investments and spending spikes they create on the budget. That's what pushed VeoliaWater to progressively migrate its 450 computer applications into a virtual datacenter at Amazon Web Services. "The financial goal is to reduce infrastructure costs to less than € 4,000 a month," says Benito Diz, the company's IT director. Indeed, the water dispenser is forced to maintain a large fleet of historical computer applications for most owners. For example, the billing software dates from the 1970s and runs on a mainframe computer. Its migration to the virtual datacenter is expected to reduce delivery costs by a factor of ten. What leave Benito Diz hope for a return on investment of less than two years. In addition to these savings, he expects agility gains to react more quickly to incidents on the network.
4 Absorb the peaks of activity
Some activities generate large variations in traffic on the information system. This is the case of commercial sites or information online. The traffic on the six websites and the fifteen mobile applications of NextRadioTV is up to 9 million visitors a day. It can not be economically answered by a 100% internal infrastructure. This is why the multimedia group opted for a hybrid solution combining private cloud, dedicated cloud and public cloud, all at the French OVH. With the public cloud, the processing capacity can be multiplied by five in less than fifteen minutes to absorb peak traffic. Compared to the traditional solution, which consisted in dimensioning the internal infrastructure at the height of the peaks, the economy is estimated between 40 and 50%. By resting on the public cloud, NextRadioTV also improves the availability of its sites and eliminates the hassle of managing the infrastructure. The time saved is spent on improving online services.
5 Reduce infrastructure costs
The question is debated. Switching to the public cloud does not always reduce costs. On the contrary, in general, it increases them over time in favor of other advantages such as flexibility, pay-as-you-go or agility. This did not prevent Air Liquide from implementing it with a goal of economy. The French supplier of industrial gases has put in place an aggressive plan to transition to the cloud of Amazon Web Services. Its director of technology, Fabien Ramos, recently left the company, had to redouble energy to fight against skepticism internally. The results prove him right since the infrastructure costs have been reduced by 30%. "We have almost no need to invest in infrastructure and this has reduced the number of contractors, and therefore the associated costs," he says. The capacity of internal datacenters has been reduced by four. So there is an exception on the cost of the cloud that confirms the rule.
