Bring your own device the challenge is not the technology
Labor Minister Ursula von der Leyen demands a strict separation of working hours and leisure time - but many employees in companies want to get rid of their company cell phones and use their beloved private smartphones. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is one of the current IT hot topics, not just headaches for CIOs and IT departments.
In addition to technical issues, this topic primarily raises work-related questions that sometimes make the implementation of BYOD concepts even more difficult. "Bring Your Own Device" is certainly a technical and organizational challenge for any company IT.
How do you deal with the devices in the network? How do I guarantee the security of company data on the private device ? How can employees in turn protect their personal information from the eyes of the IT department? What happens in the event of a device loss?
Clear demarcation between private and professional
These problems can still be solved relatively easily. For example, specialized solutions such as Novell's ZENworks Mobile Management can now set up a second virtual device on the private mobile device that is strictly separated from the normal interface-not even copy-and-paste works across that boundary.
Corporate IT has full control over this area and can also remotely erase it if the device gets lost or the employee leaves the company. At the same time, this also protects the privacy of the employee, since IT has no access to the private area of the terminal.
The IT support: ready at all times?
However, another question that is more difficult to answer and which every company has to answer is the question of support. Of course, the IT help desk needs to be able to handle questions about the business functions implemented on the home device - but what about technical issues that arise from private use, even outside of office hours?
It needs to be clarified whether the company's own IT department can provide 24-hour support to ensure that company-specific data and work processes are not jeopardized. In addition, support must be able to handle a variety of devices from different manufacturers with different operating systems.
Who has the competences for this, which programs must be available for all types of terminals? The company has to create clear guidelines and scaled organizational structures right from the start, otherwise IT support will be overwhelmingly overwhelmed in no time at all.
